![]() In this arrangement, the wheel is called the Second Wheel, because it is still the Second Wheel on the train but no longer at the center of the Movement. In wristwatches with center seconds, that is with the Second Hand pivoted coaxially with the Minute and Hour Hands, this wheel is positioned off-center to allow the Fourth Wheel to be placed at the center of the Movement. It also drives the pinion of the Third Wheel. ![]() Its arbor projects th rough a hole in the face and drives, via a friction coupling, the Cannon Pinion, which carries the Minute Hand. Its pinion is turned by the teeth on the Mainspring Barrel. Center, or Second Wheel – which turns once per hour. The First Wheel turns the pinion of the Center wheel. In horology jargon, the pawl of the ratchet is called “the click”. The ratchet allows the Mainspring Barrel to be wound without turning the wheel. First, or Great Wheel – is attached and ratcheted to the Mainspring Barrel. The going train in a modern clock or watch consists of: In watches and some high-quality clocks, their arbors have Jewel Bearings. The Going Train Wheels are the only ones under load in a timepiece since they bear the constant torque of the Mainspring which is applied to the Escapement, so these wheels are the only ones that receive significant wear. Second, its gear ratios divide the rotation of the Escape Wheel into convenient time units of seconds, minutes, and hours, to turn the timepiece’s hands. This allows the use of a very strong, slow-turning Mainspring that will run the timepiece for days or weeks. First, it scales up to the speed of rotation of the Mainspring. The Going Train is the main gear train of the timepiece. ![]() In real life, this rotation of the Mainspring Barrel will be too small to be visible. As a result, even the tiniest rotation of the Mainspring Barrel will drive the Escape Wheel many revolutions. That’s why we add a system of gears and wheels. What we need is a way to stretch the power so it will last for more than a day. If the Mainspring was attached directly to the Escape Wheel, the energy contained in it would be released entirely in a matter of seconds. But now we have to handle the last part of it – the actual “way” the energy goes from the Mainspring to the Balance Wheel. From the Power Source to the Balance, it is a long way. We’ve come a long way in exploring the mechanism of the watch. ![]()
